Scirocco

This is my 1990 Volkswagen Scirocco Scala injection, AKA Tharg (which will mean something to readers of the British 2000 AD comic)

Tharg is my second Scirocco, having accidentally killed my previous Scirocco GTII on the M1 motorway on the way back from VW Action in 2003. Oops...

Current mods include:

  • Fog lamps removed (always a bit of an afterthought by the VW design department)
  • 15 x 7.5 Oz Turbo alloy wheels, 3mm spacers on front, 5mm spacers on the rear
  • 280mm front disc brakes
  • Jetex air filter
  • Clear front indicator and side repeater lenses
  • Neuspeed 4 point upper front strut brace
  • Chrome plated radiator fan cowling
  • Leather steering wheel from a G60 Golf
  • VW Leather gear knob
  • Aftermarket central locking
  • Eyebrow spoiler
  • Sundry other shiny items - door pins, internal door handles, external door handle inserts, dip stick, door sill plates.

Standard brakes on the Scirocco are somewhat poor by modern standards and contributed to the accident mentioned above, so the big discs were a bit of a priority!

Tharg is shortly to acquire discs on the rear wheels. How much they will help improve stopping performance is debateable, but it looks a little odd with the big discs up front and yet to have drum brakes at the back.

The wheels on the car when I bought it were Addikt Speed rims, but I've just recently got hold of some fairly rare 15" Oz Turbo splits. I've only seen them on one other Mk 2 (a silver one with a Seidl body kit which I think lives in Germany). I'm keeping the others for winter use.
